Dollars and Sense

When trying to decide how to handle your money while traveling through Argentina, there are several routes you can go, the two most popular being using ATM machines and changing US dollars and Euros. The length of your trip, and the amount of traveling you will be doing, will determine the best way for you to handle your finances.

For those who decide to go the ATM/cash machine route, keep in mAr3ind that the bank will charge additional service fees. ATM machines are easy to find throughout the country, but don’t wait until the last minute to withdraw your cash; you may end up in a town with no working ATMs. Credit card companies such as Cirrus, MasterCard, Visa, Citibank and others all operate cash machines throughout Argentina.

For those taking a shorter trip who wish to avoid excess bank fees by bringing their own cash, it is best to bring US dollars or Euros, as other currency is more difficult to exchange. Money changers are common, but don’t often give the best rate. If you want to change over money, it is best to find a Banco de la Nacion, which gives a fair exchange rate. Remember to bring I.D. when changing money, as some banks require it.
