Business Ideas for Expats

Let’s face it, all of us, except the independently wealthy, have to work. For those living abroad this often means internet work, such as writing, copywriting, editing, programming and graphic design, to name a few. But what about expats who have found work in the country they are living, those who are partaking in the literal commute as opposed to the virtual, and working to pump the local economy?

If you have ever asked an expat living in Latin America what kind of work is available for foreigners more than likely the response you got was something along the lines of, “Well, there’s always teaching English.” Now there is nothing wrong with teaching English. In fact, if you play your cards just right, it can actually be one of the most lucrative jobs for expats. (Think private tutoring for the kids of one of the wealthiest families in Argentina.) It can also be a major headache. (Think teaching in an overcrowded language institute with inadequate teaching materials and kids whose parents are forcing them to be there.) Basically, my point is, if you enjoy teaching, then by all means go right ahead. Don’t, however, get it stuck in your head that teaching English is the only option. There are plenty of other business opportunities for expats to engage in that tap their creative side.

One such business is Sugar & Spice, founded by Frank Almeida and located in Capital Federal in Buenos Aires. For Sugar & Spice things are started back in 2002 with the Logosugarvision of making the highest quality cookies possible, using the very best of ingredients. Frank claims the secret behind their success is that Sugar & Spice makes their cookies just as they would make them for themselves.

In 2006 the pilot plant was moved to a new factory location where they established a retail store open to the public. The store is located at Guatemala 5419, between Humboldt & Juan B. Justo, about 20 feet from Juan B. Justo Avenue. (Click here for a map). The Sugar & Spice shop is open from Monday to Friday 10 am – 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm – 7pm. Saturdays they are open from 9 am – 1 pm. Normally the business closes for the second half of January, so you better stock up while you can! (Cash only, no credit or debit cards are accepted.)

The store offers samples of their gourmet lines, and has corporate gifts on display. If you plan on visiting Sugar & Spice send them your name, profession, and telephone number, as well as when you will be visiting, and they will have a special little surprise available for you. (E-mail your information to atencionalcliente@sugarandspice.com.ar)

Cookies to choose from at Sugar & Spice include chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin cookies, and passion for chocolate cookies (chocolate cookie dough with white chocolate chunks… Cookiesx3yummy). Sugar & Spice also make a line of savory shortbread cookies with pizza flavors, Parmesan cheese and walnuts, pesto and fugazza, a mix of cheese, onions and thyme. Other baked goods sold at the retail store include biscotti, cantucci, brownies, pudding, stollen, and panettone.

Sugar & Spice also deals with wholesalers, so if you are interested in finding Sugar & Spice products in your own country write to pedidos@sugarandspice.com.ar. If you are interested in establishing a business relationship with Sugar & Spice receiving exports in your native country to sell locally write the above e-mail address as well or call +(54) 11 4777–5423.

You can of course find out more about Sugar & Spice by visiting their web-site, which is quite comprehensive. And to get a better idea of the ideals driving this growing business, check out Frank’s blog by clicking here.

What are other expats cooking up in Buenos Aires? (No pun intended.) Stay tuned for our next post which will feature another new expat business.
