Argentina isn’t exactly famous for its vegetables, but more and more vegetarian restaurants are popping up in metropolitan centers such as Buenos Aires. One such restaurant is BIO, one of the most popular choices among the veggie-loving, health conscious organic foodie crowd.
BIO labels itself as being the first all-organic restaurant in Buenos Aires, and has set the standard pretty high. That being said, because of its reputation of quality food and
service, people come in expecting a lot, and BIO doesn’t always live up. (I have heard complaints about items not being available on the menu, bland tofu, and inattentive wait staff.)
Despite any negative commentary, if you are looking for a selection of vegetarian/vegan dishes, then BIO is the place. They are ingredient conscious, making sure they only put the highest quality products on the table, many of which can be purchased from their Organic Grocery Store.
Natural light pours in the front windows at BIO, complimenting the freshness of the food. Right away diners are presented with Spanish and English menus, which clearly indicate vegetarian and vegan choices. For those who have yet to master the Spanish language, most staff members speak some English.
The menu is extensive, and many of the dishes that are vegetarian can be converted into vegan options. The Quinoa is a pretty popular choice, seeing as the birthplace of this grain is in the Andes. The Curried Seitan is one of the best Indian inspired dishes on the menu and the Pumpkin soup is worth a try.
Veggie plates tend to be on the smaller side; portion sizes are not very large, and prices are higher than average in Buenos Aires (US $15–20 for a meal). It is, however, a nice option for those here for a short period looking for some vegetarian choices in the carnivorous city of Buenos Aires.
Tip: Come with a little food in your belly. Service is slow. This is standard in South America. Enjoy the conversation of those around you and don’t think about how long it is taking. You won’t be able to do this if you are starving, so make sure you come well before you are actually ready to eat.
BIO is located at Humboldt 2199 (at the corner of Guatemala) For more information and a look at the full menu visit BIO web-site by clicking here.
