Salon for Dining and Conversation – Casa Saltshaker

When it comes to restaurants in Argentina, there is no end to the variety in both food and atmosphere. But one, for me, stands out from the rest as being unique, and that is Casa Saltshaker.

Casa Saltshaker is a closed-door restaurant where dinner Bifesanvalentin at casa saltshakermenus are presented weekly, and served to an audience of no more than twelve in the apartment of Chef Dan Perlman and his partner and host Henry Tapia.

Dinner starts at 9:15, and guests are asked to arrive between 8:45 and 9:00. Part of the idea is to mix and meet new people, and so groups of 3 or 4 are usually the max. The plus side to that is there are 8 or 9 new people for you to chat with, in English, Spanish, or a mix of both!

The food isn’t gourmet, but it’s certainly better than I cook at home! It is “fancy home cooking,” according to the website www.casasaltshaker.com. (And the chef has been to culinary school, so he’s just being modest…) This month’s menus feature Errol Flynn’s Centennial Birthday, with goat’s cheese ravioli and beef pasties with deviled tomatoes, and the following weekend is followed by Sunthorn Phu Day in Thailand, which brings a wonderful mix of thai and curry flavors to the table. (Banana springrolls in coconut carmel… yum).

The price for the meal is AR$150 and in addition to dinner it includes a welcome cocktail, a tasting menu with paired wines, a bottle of water and coffee or tea afterwards.

Here is a little more info from the FAQ page on the Casa Saltshaker website:

The quick summary: Think of it like a dinner party at someone’s home that you just happen to be paying to attend. It is in our home, a moderate sized one bedroom duplex in Recoleta, with a garden. Open to anyone – no membership required, no referral required. Dining is at two shared tables, one for eight, one for four (we’re going to be changing those around to six and six). We offer a five course tasting menu with paired wines. The ambiance is casual. The food is “fancy home cooking”. No smoking in the house, though out in the garden is fine. Oh, we’re also not a big secret, as some folks are – we’re a registered business, we pay taxes, we made modifications to our home to fit building and health codes.

To make a reservation email dan@saltshaker.net. (If it is last minute you can call 15–6132–4146, but only if it is last minute! There is a map on the website; Casa Saltshaker is located in Barrio Norte.
